The Internal Revenue Service has processed 21 million tax returns with an average refund of $3,207 since the start of tax season at the end of January.
If you were among those who already filed well in advance of the April 15 deadline, you might be wondering when your refund is going to be processed. The Where’s My Refund? feature allows you to track that, and the IRS says it has undergone some upgrades.
Three pieces of information are available on Where’s My Refund? Verification that the IRS received your federal tax return, confirmation that the refund was approved, and the date the refund was sent. There is information available for tax returns from the 2021, 2022, and 2023 tax years.
According to the agency, this year’s version also has improvements meant to lessen the need for phone calls to the IRS. These enhancements include notifications indicating whether the IRS requires more information, access on mobile devices and using the IRS2Go app, and messages with comprehensive refund status delivered in plain language.
How to use Our Refund: Where Is It?
Enter your filing status, Social Security number, or Individual Taxpayer Identification number, and the precise amount of the expected refund from the original tax return for the year you are utilizing the program.
Essential receipt of the return by the IRS, the following details are usually available:
- 24 hours after a taxpayer’s electronically filed tax return for the year 2023 is received.
- 3–4 days following the receipt of an e-filed tax return for 2022 or 2021.
- Four weeks following the paper return’s mailing.
The tool is normally updated by the IRS once a day, usually during the night.
When will you receive your return of taxes?
Refunds are normally issued in 21 days, according to the IRS, provided that the applicant files electronically and chooses direct deposit. Erroneous, incomplete, or requiring further inspection tax returns can cause delays in the process.
If a problem occurs and additional information is needed to process the tax return, the IRS will contact the taxpayer by mail. Important Note –
If more details are required to complete a return, the IRS will get in contact with taxpayers via letter. If a refund has not been processed by mail or if it has been electronically filed more than 21 days ago, IRS phone agents and walk-in representatives have no way to inquire about the status of a refund.
