The month of Sawan, also known as Shravan, is a sacred time in the Hindu calendar. Devotees observe various fasts during this period, especially on the Monday dedicated to Lord Shiva. Though fasting is a spiritual practice, it is important not to compromise your health. Here are some healthy fasting tips that will help you stay healthy while observing this religious tradition.
Stay hydrated
One of the most important aspects of fasting is staying hydrated. The high temperatures during Sawan pose a risk of dehydration. Drinking plenty of water, herbal teas and fresh fruit juices (without sugar) will help you maintain hydration levels. Coconut water is especially useful as it replenishes electrolyte levels and gives you energy. Avoid caffeinated and carbonated drinks as they can cause dehydration.
Balanced Nutrient Intake
Fasting does not mean depriving your body of important nutrients. Plan meals that include a balanced combination of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. Foods like milk, yogurt, nuts and seeds are good sources of protein and fat. Eating fruits like bananas, apples and pomegranates will provide you with important vitamins and minerals. For carbohydrates, consider sabudana (tapioca), sweet potato and buckwheat, which are commonly used in fasting foods.
Eat small, frequent meals
Instead of large meals, eat small, frequent meals throughout the day. This habit helps maintain energy levels and prevent overeating. This is especially important if you are following a strict fast and eating a small variety of foods. Small meals aid digestion and prevent bloating and discomfort.
Avoid fried and oily foods
Although it may be tempting to break your fast with traditional fried foods, these can be hard on the stomach and cause digestive problems. Choose healthier cooking methods like baking, grilling or steaming. For example, instead of deep-fried pakoras, you can try a baked version with the addition of a little oil. If you eat fried foods, do so in moderation and use healthy oils like coconut oil or olive oil.
Consume Fiber-Rich Foods
Fiber is essential for maintaining healthy digestion, especially when on a restrictive diet while fasting. Eat fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains to aid digestion and prevent constipation. For example, sweet potatoes, which are often permitted during fasting, are rich in fiber as well as carbohydrates.
Limit your sugar and salt intake
Too much sugar and salt can lead to dehydration and other health problems. It is common to use rock salt (senda namak) while fasting, but it is still important to use it sparingly. Also, do not add excessive amounts of sugar to drinks and desserts. Natural sweeteners such as honey and palm sugar can be used in moderation as a healthier alternative.
Listen to your body
Fasting should not be hard on the body. Pay attention to how you feel and don’t overwhelm yourself. If you experience dizziness, weakness, or other discomfort, consider modifying your fast or breaking the fast with a light meal. It’s important to remember that the purpose of fasting is spiritual growth and self-discipline, not to harm your health.
