Netflix has set a July 1 release date for Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, according to the streamer’s app.
Netflix acquired the series last October after Paramount+ decided to pull several original series, including Star Trek: Prodigy, from the platform in June as part of cost-cutting measures. It is already in the works and will not continue.
This is the third outpost of Prodigy, which originally began as a series for Nickelodeon. Its focus on youth doesn’t fit with the rest of the franchise. The series has since moved to Paramount+.
Star Trek: Prodigy tells the story of a motley crew of young aliens who must find a way to work together as they move through the larger galaxy in search of a better future. These six young misfits know nothing about the ship they’ve captured, a first for a Star Trek series, but as they adventure together, each learns about Starfleet and the ideals it represents.
The series is created by Emmy Award winners Kevin Hageman and Dan Hageman (Trollhunters) and Star Trek Universe boss Alex Kurtzman and the team at Secret Hideout. Star Trek: Prodigy is produced by CBS Studios’ Eye Animation Productions, Nickelodeon Animation, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Aaron Byers, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Ross serve as executive producers, along with co-showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman. Ben Hibbon serves as director, executive producer and creative director for the animated series. Aaron Waltke and Patrick Krebs also currently serve as co-executive producers.
