Today’s annual Doodle celebrates Hari Merdeka, a national holiday in Malaysia. On this day in 1957, the Federation of Malaya declared its independence from foreign rule at the Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
To witness the official transition, more than 20,000 people gathered in an arena built specifically for the celebration. On this historic night, the young country’s flag, as depicted in today’s artwork, was raised for the first time. Later in 1963, Malaya merged with the states of Sabah and Sarawak to become present-day Malaysia.
On Hari Merdeka, people from all over Malaysia take part in vibrant ceremonies and celebrations to celebrate Malaysia’s development. The most important events, such as the Merdeka Parade, still take place in Kuala Lumpur, where citizens come together for an unforgettable night of celebration. Songs such as Tanggal 31 and Satu Malaysia can be heard everywhere, and many enjoy dishes such as nasi lemak (an aromatic rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaves) and roti canai (a flaky flatbread served with curry).
Selamat Hari Merdeka!
