This music video doodle features the song “Immaterial” by Scottish musician, producer and DJ Sophie Zeon, known in music circles as SOPHIE.

As a child, Sophie was introduced to electronic and rave music through cassettes by her father and soon taught herself to make music using a toy keyboard. In the early 2000s, she moved to Berlin and founded the dance-pop group Motherland, performing across Germany and the UK. Sophie is known for being media-shy, preferring anonymity and staying out of the spotlight.

Sophie began releasing music as a solo artist, with the songs “Bipp” and “Lemonade” gaining popularity. These tracks were part of Sophie’s 2015 compilation album PRODUCT. In addition to composing, she also worked as a DJ and produced tracks for other artists such as Charli XCX, Kim Petras, and Madonna.

Early in Sophie’s career, her presence was minimal, but after coming out as transgender in 2017, she began to participate more in interviews and public appearances.

In 2018, Sophie released Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides, an album that mixed aggressive electronic beats with solemn melodies about identity and acceptance. The hyperpop, experimental album earned her a Grammy nomination in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category, making her the first transgender artist to be nominated in that category.

Sophie will forever be remembered as someone who brought a new interpretation to popular music. Her album SOPHIE, produced by her and her brother, is scheduled for release in September 2024.

Happy Birthday, Sophie Zeon!
