How to Use iPhone’s ‘Genmoji’ to Create Your Own Custom Emojis

Users of iPhones and iPads can now take use of a number of new capabilities that leverage Apple Intelligence thanks to the release of iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2. One such AI-generated emoji that was initially presented at WWDC 2024 is Genmoji.

What are genmoji?

If you have iOS 18.2 or iPadOS 18.2 installed, you can generate customized emojis called genmoji. These are the emojis of your dreams, brought to life with the aid of Apple Intelligence. You can specify the type of emoji you would like to see, such as an octopus DJ or a dejected cowboy, and Apple’s AI will try its best to create it. If you have a picture of someone in your library, you can even make your own emojis of them. Genmoji will be saved on your keyboard when you create them, allowing you to utilize them in Apple apps that support emojis. They can be sent as Tapback reactions, stickers, or as part of texts.

How to make a genmoji

A device running iOS 18.2/iPadOS 18.2 or later and compatible with Apple Intelligence is required in order to create a genmoji. This includes all iPad models with the M1 chip or later, iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Although Apple says the capability would eventually be available on Macs, Genmoji can now only be created on iPhones and iPads. The process for making a Genmoji on an iPhone or iPad is same.

To begin, tap the text field to reveal the keyboard and start a chat. Then, depending on whatever icon you have, tap either the globe or the smiley. This should result in a rainbow smiling icon with a plus sign at the upper right corner of the keyboard. When you tap it, a text bar asking you to explain the emoji you want to make will display. After entering the description, click “Done.”

Make sure you have already named the individual in your Photos app if you are creating a Genmoji featuring them. Once you have written your description, select the “Choose a Person” option that appears above the text field. The person it identified from your images will be displayed to you along with some initial styling options. It will use that character to build the Genmoji when you click on the one you want.

If the initial results don’t meet your expectations, simply try modifying your description until you achieve better outcomes. You can locate Genmoji on your keyboard by touching the sticker icon or by swiping right through all of the emoji possibilities after you’ve created them. Additionally, you may add them to Tapback by searching the emoji keyboard by pressing and holding a message and then selecting the smiley with the plus sign icon.

The process of removing Genmoji

You can always remove a Genmoji once you’ve made it if you change your mind later on. Return to the emoji keyboard and either hit the sticker icon or swipe right through all the pages to accomplish this. Next, locate the Genmoji you wish to remove, press and hold it, and then select Remove when the menu appears.
