The curtain will fall on this year’s film season as 2024 draws to a close. However, a lot of films were released this year on both OTT platforms and in theaters. Some of them had high budgets, while others had compelling storylines. Numerous OTT releases became the talk of the town. This year, as in previous years, Netflix exceeded the expectations. Therefore, below are the top 5 Netflix movies whose plots outperformed a number of several big-budget releases.
Amar Singh Chamkila
The Bollywood biopic Amar Singh Chamkila, which is ranked among the top 5 overall and became the best Hindi OTT release, is the year’s top movie. The film, which was directed by Imtiaz Ali, is brilliant because of Diljit Dosanjh’s outstanding performance as Chamkila, which is bolstered by Parineeti Chopra and Anjum Batra. With its stunning photography, soundtrack by AR Rahman, and direction by Imtiaz, the film revives Chamkila’s heritage and wins the Filmfare OTT Awards.
Sector 36
Starring Vikrant Massey and Deepak Dobriyal, Sector 36 on Netflix immerses viewers in a terrifying universe based on the actual Nithari offenses, often known as the Noida serial murders. A terrible and eerie story set in an apparently tranquil affluent suburb is revealed in this criminal thriller, which skillfully combines reality and suspense. A story that demands to be presented in its uncompromising realism, Sector 36 is not for the weak of heart or overthinkers due to its unadorned portrayal of dread.
Bhakshak
The actual Muzaffarpur Shelter Home Case, in which 35 girls were saved from sexual harassment and abuse, served as the model for this. The film is thought-provoking and hard-hitting, with Bhumi Pednekar playing a struggling TV journalist. Its female character is shown as powerful and uncompromising in her pursuit of justice. Bhakshak, which was released in the beginning of 2024, sets the standard for Hindi films that tell stories that are more compelling and inspired by real-life events. Shah Rukh Khan’s production firm created Bhakshak, which was made available on Netflix.
Maharaj
Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan makes his debut in Maharaj, which explores the 1862 Maharaj Libel Case and reveals the wrongdoing of religious leader Yadunathji Brij Ratan Ji Maharaj. The movie, which stars Jaideep Ahlawat, examines contemporary social concerns while showcasing the work of real-life journalist Karsandas Mulji. Fans of judicial drama may not be entirely satisfied, but Maharaj presents an engaging and timely story. It has a compelling story and is among the better movies of 2024, outperforming some of the ones that were released in theaters.
Do Patti
The video explores themes such as gender inequality, domestic violence, childhood trauma, and oppression in Indian households. Although Kajol’s uneven Haryanvi accent hinders her performance, the outstanding performances by Kriti and Shaheer more than make up for her flaws. Do Patti, in spite of these shortcomings, is a notable one-time viewing experience that is easily superior to a number of the year’s big releases.
