A Historic Moment in Estonia’s Journey

Back in 1918, amid the chaos of World War I, Estonia bravely declared its independence from the Russian Empire. The momentous Declaration of Independence, known as the Manifesto to the Peoples of Estonia, was drafted in Tallinn by the Salvation Committee. The original plan was to proclaim it on February 21, but history had other ideas. It wasn’t until February 23, 1918, in the town of Pärnu, that the manifesto was publicly read for the first time.

The following day, February 24, marked the official birth of an independent Estonia. However, the country’s freedom was fleeting. Within 24 hours, German forces occupied Estonia, refusing to recognize the new republic. It wasn’t until November 1918, after Germany’s defeat in World War I, that Estonia finally took control of its destiny. Since 1919, February 24th has been commemorated as Estonia’s official Independence Day.
