Just days after unveiling its latest image generator, OpenAI has revealed its plans to release a new open-source language model—the company’s first since GPT-2. To guide its development, OpenAI is inviting developers, researchers, and AI enthusiasts to share feedback through an official form.
Open-source language model (OS LLMs) are designed to process, generate, and analyze human language using vast datasets and complex algorithms. They enable a wide range of applications, from chatbots to automated content generation.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took to X (formerly Twitter) to make the announcement, saying:
“We are planning to release our first open-weight language model since GPT-2. We’ve been thinking about this for a long time, but other priorities took precedence. Now it feels important to do.”
Before launching, OpenAI will evaluate the model using its preparedness framework—a rigorous process applied to all of its models. Altman emphasized that additional precautions will be taken since the open-source nature of the model allows for post-release modifications.
OpenAI has announced its first open-weight language model since GPT-2, and CEO Sam Altman shared that the company will be hosting its inaugural developer event in San Francisco in the upcoming weeks. Additional sessions are also set to take place in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, providing a chance for a worldwide audience to connect with OpenAI’s latest innovations.
This announcement follows the recent viral success of ChatGPT. Altman noted that the chatbot attracted one million users within just an hour, largely due to the excitement surrounding its new image generation feature. A particularly popular trend emerged—”Turn it into Ghibli-style”—where users transformed their profile pictures, pets, and even politicians into charming, anime-inspired illustrations.
As OpenAI increases its outreach through developer events and open-source projects, the company is gearing up for a new era of innovation in AI-driven creativity and language processing.
