Amazon has recently launched a new version of its voice assistant, called Alexa+, and is preparing to reveal a “constellation” of AI-driven devices.
“You can imagine … a constellation of devices that has to come together to make it a better experience,” Panos Panay, the CEO of Amazon’s devices and services division, told CNN in an interview published on Thursday, February 27.
At present, Amazon offers a variety of products, such as Ring security cameras, Eero Wi-Fi routers, and Echo smart speakers, with AI features being gradually integrated into these devices. The company also provides smart glasses, smart rings, and fitness trackers.
With the launch of Alexa+ on February 26, Amazon has upgraded its voice assistant with generative AI capabilities, making it more intelligent and responsive. This enhanced version can handle more complex tasks, including grocery ordering, service bookings, messaging, video searches, and document reading. A notable feature is its ability to remember past interactions, enabling more personalized responses.
The rollout of this advanced voice assistant is expected soon, offering users improved AI functionalities through their existing Alexa devices. According to PYMNTS Intelligence, 27% of consumers reported using a voice-activated device or speaker in the past year, and 54% indicated a preference for voice technology in the future due to its speed compared to typing or using a touchscreen.
The introduction of Alexa+ comes over a year after Amazon first announced its plans to integrate AI into its voice assistant, highlighting the challenges tech companies face in this integration process. Apple has encountered similar difficulties while working to enhance its virtual assistant, Siri.
