Today's Doodle celebrates Switzerland National Day. This holiday marks the founding of the Swiss Confederation. On this day in 1291, the cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden signed the Federal Charter, guaranteeing their protection and unity against outsiders. 600 years after the historic agreement was signed in 1899, Swiss National Day is celebrated for the first time. The main ceremony takes place at the legendary Rütli Meadow, where the three cantons first met to strengthen the agreement. Many people enjoy traditional dishes such as Rösti (potato cakes), Zopf (rolls) and Cervelat (Switzerland’s national sausage) throughout the day. As night falls, bonfires burn on mountaintops, fireworks light up the sky, and Swiss flags, like the one in today's Doodle, fly across the country. Happy Switzerland’s National Day!
