Apple intends to incorporate liquid metal into the hinges of its forthcoming foldable iPhone to enhance durability and minimize screen creasing, as reported by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
The company has selected liquid metal, produced through a die-casting process, as a crucial element in tackling prevalent challenges associated with foldable devices. This design decision aims to improve screen flatness and reduce the crease marks that often affect folding displays.
Kuo highlights that while Apple has previously utilized liquid metal in smaller components, such as SIM ejector pins, this foldable iPhone will represent the first significant application of the material in an essential mechanical component. Dongguan EonTec is expected to be the exclusive supplier of liquid metal.
Earlier reports indicate that the foldable iPhone will feature a 7.8-inch main display when opened and a 5.5-inch cover display. The device is likely to adopt a book-style design akin to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold, rather than a clamshell configuration.
According to prior insights from Kuo, the foldable iPhone may include two rear cameras, a single front-facing camera, and Touch ID integrated into the power button. The device is projected to be approximately 4.5mm thick when opened and between 9mm and 9.5mm when closed.
Mass production is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2026, indicating a possible launch in late 2026 or early 2027.
