ASC Awards 2025 winners

The 39th Annual American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Awards honored the best in cinematography on Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton, with Edward Lachman taking home the top prize for his work on Netflix’s Maria. The film, starring Angelina Jolie as opera icon Maria Callas, earned its first major accolade as Lachman was awarded the Theatrical Feature Film prize.

Winning the ASC’s top award is often a strong indicator of success at the Academy Awards, where Maria is also nominated for Best Cinematography—its only Oscar nod. Over the ASC’s 38-year history, the winner of this category has gone on to secure the Best Cinematography Oscar 18 times, most recently with Hoyte van Hoytema for Oppenheimer. At the upcoming Oscars, Lachman will compete against:

  • Lol Crawley (The Brutalist)
  • Greig Fraser (Dune: Part Two)
  • Paul Guilhaume (Emilia Pérez)
  • Jarin Blaschke (Nosferatu)

All five nominees were also in the running for the ASC Award, making the Oscar race even more exciting.

Television & Documentary Winners

Hosted by Ed Helms, the ASC Awards also recognized exceptional work in television and documentaries. Jomo Fray received the Spotlight Award for his cinematography in Amazon MGM Studios’ Nickel Boys, while Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw took home the Documentary Award for Gaucho Gaucho.
