Canada vs. USA: This season, there won’t be an NHL All-Star game; instead, the U.S. and Canada will square off in a championship final on Thursday night as part of the league’s round robin event, called the 4 Nations Face-Off. Four teams of players from the United States, Canada, Sweden, and Finland compete in the 4 Nations tournament; following an intense week of battle, the two North American teams advance. Even though half of the players in the international tournament are from Scandinavia, all 4 Nations matches take place in North America, with the Bell Centre in Montreal hosting games from February 12–15 and the TD Garden in Boston hosting games from February 16–20.

How does the 4 Nations Face-Off work?
The 4 Nations tournament begins with a round-robin format, where each team competes in three matches, facing every other team once. In contrast to standard NHL rules, if a round-robin game goes into overtime, it will feature 10 minutes of 3-on-3 sudden death play, followed by a three-round shootout if necessary. Should the championship match require overtime, teams will engage in 20-minute sudden death periods at full strength until a goal is scored. Points are awarded as follows: a regulation win earns three points, while a win in overtime or a shootout grants two points. Conversely, a loss in overtime or a shootout results in one point, and a regulation loss yields no points. At the conclusion of the round-robin stage, the two teams with the highest point totals, specifically the U.S. and Canada in this instance, will progress to the championship game on February 20.
