The ten-part television series Nautilus, which was influenced by Jules Verne’s well-loved Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, finds a new home.
The show has been signed by AMC, and it will premiere on AMC+ and AMC in 2024. The action follows the streamer’s previous summer cancellation of the Disney+ UK commission as part of its content reduction strategy.
The genesis story of Captain Nemo is told in Nautilus. He was an Indian Prince who was deprived of his birthright and family, an East India Mercantile Company prisoner, and a man who was determined to get revenge on those who had stolen everything from him.
It is the latest series eliminated by Disney as part of its drive to minimise streaming expenses — the Mouse House is incurring an impairment charge of about $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion – to find a new home. Similar to The Spiderwick Chronicles, it was cancelled by Disney+ but managed to find a home on Roku.
Disney Entertainment produces the series, which was filmed in Australia starting last year with funding from the Australian government. Producing it are Anand Tucker’s Seven Stories and Xavier Marchand’s Moonriver Studios.
In the stunning Nautilus, Shazad Latif plays Nemo, the Indian Prince who goes out with his motley crew to explore a wonderful underwater world and engage in combat with the enemy.
Together with Thierry Frémont and Georgia Flood, the cast also includes Pacharo Mzembe, Arlo Green, Tyrone Ngatai, Ling Cooper Tang, Andrew Shaw, Ashan Kumar, Céline Menville, and Kayden Price.
Alongside Johanna Devereaux, Chris Loveall, Colleen Woodcock, and Daisy Gilbert, James Dormer writes and executive produces. Michael Matthews is the primary director, and Cameron Welsh is the producer.
Ben Davis, EVP of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios, stated, “Nautilus is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like Orphan Black: Echoes.” “We are looking forward to bringing it to AMC+ and AMC as a special television event next year.”
