Real Madrid’s 3-0 victory over Pachuca in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final on Wednesday made Carlo Ancelotti the club’s most decorated coach with 15 championships over his tenure.
Three Champions League trophies, two La Liga championships, two Copa del Reys, two Spanish Supercopas, three UEFA Super Cups, two Club World Cups, and now the Intercontinental Cup have all been won by Ancelotti during his two stints as manager of Real Madrid, from 2013 to 2015 and starting next year.
During his 14 years in charge from 1960 to 1974, the renowned Madrid coach Miguel Muñoz set the previous record, winning two European Cups, nine league crowns, two Copas del Rey, and one Intercontinental Cup.
“I’m very happy … It’s a success,” Ancelotti said of the win over Pachuca on Wednesday. “We took control little by little, and ended the game well. We have those differences of quality always, but we also have to show the right attitude. Today, in the end, I liked that. In the end, up front, we made the difference … In attack we did well. We have a lot of quality, Kylian [Mbappé] played a good game, and Rodrygo scored. We’re happy.”
When Madrid defeated Atalanta 2-0 to win the UEFA Super Cup in August, Ancelotti and Muñoz were tied.
Along with Mbappé and Rodrygo, Vinícius Júnior, who scored goals on Wednesday, gave Ancelotti credit for the team’s achievements.
“Congratulations to the mister, he deserves it, he gives us freedom, he’s perfect for us,” Vinícius Jr. added.
“He deserves it. He’s won everything. He guides us,” Fede Valverde told Telecinco after the match.
When Madrid plays in the Spanish Supercopa in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in January, he will have the opportunity to add to his collection of trophies.
On January 9, they will play Mallorca in the semifinals, and three days later, they might play either Barcelona or Athletic Club in the final.
Ancelotti was fired in May 2015 following a less successful second season after joining Madrid in June 2013 and winning the Champions League in his debut season.
He has since won two La Liga and Champions League doubles, in 2022 and 2024, after making an unexpected comeback to the team in June 2021.
After nearly 30 years as a coach, the seasoned Italian has a number of records.
With Real Madrid in Spain, AC Milan in Italy, Bayern Munich in Germany, Chelsea in England, and Paris Saint-Germain in France, he is the only coach to have won a league title in each of Europe’s “big five leagues.”
In addition, Ancelotti is the only manager to have won five Champions Leagues, having done so twice when coaching AC Milan in 2003 and 2007.
