One of McDonald’s most popular treats will soon be miniaturized.
Starting this month, the Chicago-based burger chain will be offering “Mini McFlurries” at participating restaurants across the U.S. The mini versions of the popular dessert come in limited-time special flavors, including classic Oreo and M&M flavors and Kit Kat Banana Split.
Officials say the treat was inspired by friends who always ask for “just a bite.”
“Instead of grabbing an extra spoon, you can grab them a Mini McFlurry of their own,” a release said. “Or maybe you’re looking for a quick afternoon pick-me-up… the Mini McFlurry is perfect for you, too.”
The press release states that the treat will be available on McDonald’s menus starting Sept. 10.
The chain will also introduce more sustainable packaging for the McFlurry, both the regular McFlurry and the introduction of mini versions of the dessert, officials said.
According to a press release, McDonald’s will phase out the lids on its McFlurry cups and instead serve them in “more environmentally friendly four-cup flap.”
The change is intended to bring McDonald’s closer to its goal of sourcing “100% of primary guest packaging from renewable, recycled or certified materials by the end of 2025..”
The release said the four-cup is now available in other international markets, including Canada and Indonesia.
The new McFlurry cup follows McDonald’s announcement last year that it will phase out the McFlurry spoon (also known as the “spindle”).
“This small change will help reduce single-use plastic waste in restaurants,” McDonald’s said at the time.
The change joins other recent announcements by McDonald’s, including a limited-time $5 meal offer for customers.
