The 2024 Critics Choice Awards winner for Best Musical, Best Ensemble, and Best Music, “The Color Purple,” will at last be available to stream at home. The movie will be released on 4K UHD, DVD, and Blu-ray on March 12 and will be available for rent or purchase on digital platforms like Apple TV and Prime Video on January 16.
In addition to behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage that shows the process of turning Alice Walker’s novel into a musical, the digital and physical releases come with dozens of special features, including three featurettes featuring the director Blitz Bazawule, filmmakers, and the renowned cast about the making of the film.
Produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey, Fantasia Barrino, who played Celie in the Broadway version of “The Color Purple” in 2007, returns to the role in the new Warner Bros. version. The story centres on Celie, a Black Southern woman who experiences abuse from her father and husband in the early 20th century. Corey Hawkins as Harpo, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as Mama, H.E.R. as Squeak, Colman Domingo as Mister, Danielle Brooks as Sofia (a part she played in a 2015 theatre production), and Halle Bailey as Young Nettie comprise the ensemble cast.
The film will probably get several Oscar nominations due to its outstanding cast and positive reviews. Although the movie is probably going to compete for best picture, Brooke and Henson have a chance in the supporting actress category. Additionally, the picture has a potential to win Oscars for its technical aspects, including cinematographer Dan Laustsen and seasoned costume designer Francine Jamison-Tanchuck.
