With the help of three tentpoles, the Walt Disney Studios became the first studio to surpass $2 billion at the North American box office in 2024 on Tuesday, December 17.
At $653 million, Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is the highest-grossing animated film of all time, the ninth highest-grossing North American film of all time, and the top release of the year.
With $637 million, Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine is the second-biggest movie of the year, the largest R-rated movie of all time, and the twelfth-highest North American gross of all time, right behind Inside Out 2.
With $342 million, Moana 2 from Walt Disney Animation Studios is presently the fifth-highest North American release of the year.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Alien: Romulus, both produced by 20th Century Studios, did well, grossing $171 million and $105 million, respectively.
Disney achieved the feat in 2022, making this the second time a studio has topped $2 billion since 2019. Since 2010, the studio has done this seven times. The majority of Mufasa: The Lion King’s box office receipts in 2025 may come from its December 25 opening.
