Disney+ Cancels “American Born Chinese” After One Season

According to report that “American Born Chinese” has been cancelled at Disney+ following one season.

Disney was pleased with the show’s creativity, but its viewership was insufficient to support the series’ renewal, according to a source with knowledge of the decision. The creators intend to pitch the show to additional networks.

In May, “American Born Chinese” had its Disney+ debut. Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel of the same name served as the inspiration for the Disney Branded Television series. The show “chronicles the trials and tribulations of a regular American teenager whose life is forever changed when he befriends the son of a mythological god,” according to the official logline.

Ben Wang, Michelle Yeoh, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Jimmy Liu, Ke Huy Quan, Sydney Taylor, and Daniel Wu were among the cast members of the series. Critics gave the show favourable reviews; out of 51 reviews, the first season had a 94% approval rating.

As executive producer and showrunner, Kelvin Yu created the television series. Executive producing and directing the series was Destin Daniel Cretton. Additionally serving as executive producers were Yang, Erin O’Malley, Asher Goldstein, and Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan. Producers of “American Born Chinese” included 20th Television.

The news of the show’s termination breaks barely one day after Michelle Yeoh’s co-starring Netflix series “The Brothers Sun” premiered. Recently, Quan made an appearance in Disney+’s second season of the Marvel series “Loki.” In the meantime, Cretton is serving as executive producer, director, and co-creator of the upcoming Marvel-Disney+ series “Wonder Man.”
