Neeraj Chopra, the javelin throw champion at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, started his season by winning the Doha Diamond League 2023 on his first attempt at the Qatar Sports Club on Friday with a world-leading throw of 88.67 meters.
Neeraj Chopra, known for his explosive starts, competed in Doha on a clear night. On his first attempt, he came within striking distance of his personal best and national javelin record of 89.94 meters.
It was the second time Neeraj Chopra won a Jewel Association meeting in his profession. The year before, he won for the first time in Lausanne.
In his second attempt, Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch, who won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, clocked a season-best 88.63 meters. Vadlejch was not far behind in Doha.
In his second attempt, the Indian javelin star matched his first throw with a distance of 86.04 meters. Neeraj Chopra’s third toss estimated 85.47m before he fouled his fourth. His two most recent throws were 84.37 and 86.52 meters.
Third place went to Grenada’s Anderson Peters, the current world champion in the javelin, who threw 85.88. The initial attempt also failed with his throw.
Neeraj Chopra, 25, received eight qualification points from the first leg as a result of his top finish.
Competitors contending in Jewel Association are granted focuses rather than awards and the best eight competitors toward the finish of the Precious stone Association series meet all requirements for the Jewel Association last. The finals for this year will be held on September 16 and 17 in Eugene.
By winning the September grand final in Zurich, Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian athlete to win the Diamond League.
India’s Eldhose Paul, a Republic Games triple leap champion, completed tenth in the 11-men field with a best leap of 15.84m on his most memorable endeavor.
Eldhose Paul, 26, made his Diamond League debut and failed to advance to the final round after hitting 13.65 and 14.70 meters on his next two attempts. At India’s Federation Cup last year, Eldhose Paul set a personal best of 16.99 meters.
Ruling Olympic triple leap champion Pedro Pichardo of Portugal oversaw 17.91m to beat out all competitors while Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Hugues Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso came next with 17.81m. Andy Diaz Hernandez of Cuba, the current Diamond League champion, finished third with a score of 17.80.
The following leg of the Precious stone Association series will be held in Rabat, Morocco on May 28. Neeraj Chopra, in the mean time, will be in real life next at the Brilliant Spike Ostrava occasion in the Czech Republic on June 27.
