Key athletes to keep an eye on on Day 2 of the Winter Youth Olympic Games are from Gangwon 2024
Alpine skiing makes its debut at Gangwon 2024 with the super-G event. Romy Ertl of Germany is hoping to emulate her mother, three-time Olympic winner Martina Ertl, in the women’s division. This season, 16-year-old Ertl has already made her senior debut. She has competed in FIS competitions and earned eight podiums, including two wins.
Annika Hunt, the national champion skier from the United States, will be keen to throw her German teammate for a loop, though. While Miha Oserban is mostly focused on slalom in the men’s division, the Slovenian athlete is also a threat in super-G.
The young athletes in biathlon will compete in the single mixed relay. At the Alpensia Biathlon Centre, France, Italy, and Norway are some of the leading competitors.
Italy has a strong lineup for the men’s singles as the luge action resumes. The top times were set in the sixth and final training session by Philipp Brunner and Leon Haselrieder. Because Alexandra Oberstolz and Sofie Kofler have produced some remarkable times during training, the Italians appear to be the team to beat in the women’s doubles as well.
The 1000m event for men and women kicks off the short track speed skating contests. Three-time gold medallist Dominik Major of Hungary from the Winter European Youth Olympic Festival will be the favourite for the men’s division, while double silver medallist Angel Daleman**,** of the Netherlands from the 2022 Junior World Championship will be among the medal favourites in the women’s division.
Day 2 of the ski jumping competitions concludes with the mixed team competition. At Gangwon 2024, Norway, Germany, Slovenia, and Poland will compete for the last set of ski jumping medals.
Lastly, there will be a snowboard cross mixed team competition at the Winter Youth Olympic Games for the first time. The countries Austria, France, Switzerland, and the United States are the ones to watch out for.
