There is now a new broadcast location for the Golden Globes. The 81st Academy Awards will take place on January 7, 2024, and will broadcast live onParamount+ and be accessible via the CBS app. This is a flagship time slot for the programme, which will be broadcast on CBS Sunday after an NFL doubleheader and is expected to be heavily promoted.
The announcement comes after a multi-month search that began when Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge purchased the Golden Globes’ properties, rights, and assets from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in June. The HFPA was dissolved and the awards ceremony was transformed into a for-profit business.
The new broadcast agreement ends the Globes’ lengthy affiliation with NBC and returns them to CBS, the network that televised the ceremony in 1981 and 1982. With the Grammy Awards and the Golden Globes, it provides CBS two of the biggest TV award shows.
George Cheeks, President and Chief Executive Officer of CBS, stated, “Live entertainment and sports have, and will always be, a hallmark of CBS, and the Globes adds an exciting new dimension to our first quarter schedule this year.” “The January timing also provides the added benefit of yet another signature platform to promote the return of CBS’ new primetime schedule in February.”
The film and television categories of the ceremony will be televised live coast to coast. Following the live presentation, stations in the Pacific time zone that carried the event will also repeat the complete Golden Globe Awards show in prime time.
Jay Penske, CEO, Chairman, and Founder of Penske Media, the parent company of Deadline, and owner of Dick Clark Productions, said, “We’re so proud to bring the Golden Globes to CBS to celebrate 81 years of award show history.” “CBS has demonstrated an impressive 30-year commitment to the Grammys and been instrumental to their long-term success. In CBS we found an ideal partner who understands the value of live entertainment programming and whose multi-platform distribution model is reflective of how global audiences choose to consume content today.”
The programme remained at NBC, where it had been since 1996, despite CBS attempting to win the Globes under a previous government in 2010. In order to maintain its long-term airing of the Globes until 2026, NBCUniversal inked a new eight-year contract in 2018. Following reports of the HFPA’s dubious business practises and lack of diversity, NBC declined to air the 2022 show; hence, the ceremony was not broadcast on television that year. In 2023, the network participated in a telecast again as a broadcast partner, which was also streamed on Peacock. The contract was just for a year, and it was not renewed, thus a search was started for a new broadcast partner.
The 2023 event had the second-lowest ratings ever (6.3 million viewers), which preceded the Globes’ network transition. It also follows the Globes’ two-year endeavour to broaden the pool of eligible voters and introduce a new code of conduct.
Two new categories, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television, will be added to the 2024 Oscars.
“In an age when audiences are viewing content on their own schedules, we are delighted to bring the Golden Globes to viewers globally through CBS’ robust platforms,” said Helen Hoehne, President, Golden Globes. “Audiences will have the ability to enjoy our show live and on demand. We cannot wait to reveal the magic of what will be our most unforgettable show yet.”
The 81st Golden Globe Awards are being executive produced by Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner of White Cherry Entertainment. Weiss will also serve as director. Dick Clark Productions produces and owns the awards programme, which is watched in over 185 nations.
