Google doodle celebrates 172nd Birthday of Mexican artist and lithographer José Guadalupe Posada

One of the most important lithographers in Mexican history, Jose Guadalupe Posada, is honoured in this Doodle. The development of graphic art in the 20th century was influenced by his work.

Posada worked in ceramic factories and on fields during his early years. Posada joined La Academia Municipal de Dibujo de Aguascalientes (the Municipal Drawing Academy of Aguascalientes) after showing promise as an artist. He started an apprenticeship in 1968 and gained expertise in engraving and lithography.

Posada was employed as a political cartoonist by an Aguascalientes local newspaper three years later. Posada cherished the chance of showing his work to a larger audience, despite the fact that it was only published for 11 issues. He then started his own lithography business and became a secondary school teacher.

Posada purchased a printing press in 1876 and began working together on multiple newspapers. He created famous lithographs during this period, including ones that showed the León flood. Posada gained notoriety as well for creating animated skeletons that he used to comment on politics and society. Some pieces, such as La Calavera Catrina, have remained popular over the years because of their connection to Día de los Muertos. His skeletons served as inspiration for today’s Doodle artwork.

Aguascalientes, his hometown, established a museum honouring his achievements. Posada’s avant-garde ideas established the start of graphic design in the annals of art history.
