The Google Doodle of today honours Azerbaijan’s Day of Independence Restoration. The Constitution Act, On the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan, which ratified the nation’s long-awaited restoration of independence, was approved on this day in 1991.
The second of Azerbaijan’s two Independence Days falls on this day. On May 28, which celebrates the founding of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan in 1918, the country celebrates its first National Day. Unfortunately, Azerbaijan’s statehood was short-lived due to the Soviet invasion. The Azerbaijanis were subjected to abuse and violence for the following 70 years while living under Soviet administration, yet they never gave up the quest for independence.
After the Constitutional Act was introduced in a preliminary vote, Azerbaijan’s independence was finally recovered. One question was printed on the ballot paper, asking, “Do you support the Constitutional Act on the state Independence of Azerbaijan? “More than 95% of people voted in favour of freedom.
The Azerbaijani people honour the sacrifices made to obtain freedom on this day, even though it is not customarily celebrated with lavish festivities.
Azerbaijan, happy Day of Restoration of Independence.
