The Google Doodle of today honours Slovakia’s Day of Freedom and Democracy. This holiday honours two occasions that gave the people of Czechoslovakia a free and democratic nation. Students conducted rallies and demonstrations against the German occupiers on this day in 1939. After 40 years of occupation, students marched against Soviet communists once more on the 50th anniversary of the 1989 demonstrations.
The holiday, which was officially established in 2001, honours the valour exhibited by protesters battling for independence in both 1939 and 1989 and serves as a reminder to Slovakians (as well as Czechs). The Velvet Revolution is the name given to the occurrence in 1989.
Slovakians feel a great sense of pride on Freedom and Democracy Day. To celebrate, a lot of people go to street fairs and candlelight celebrations.
Happy Freedom and Democracy Day, Slovakia!
