The day that Basarabia, Bucovina, Transilvania, Banat, Crișana, and Maramureș united with the Romanian Kingdom is commemorated in today’s Doodle. On this day in 1918, it was made a holiday for the public.
The so-called “Little Union” of Wallachia and Maldovia in 1859 led to the formation of Romania. Romania became a monarchy in 1881 after gaining independence from the Ottoman Empire.Transylvania was a territory inhabited primarily by Romanians that was the subject of contention between Austria-Hungary and Romania.
In 1918, the National Assembly met in Alba Iulia and voted unanimously in favor of the expanded union. Representatives from Transylvania, Banat, Crisana, and Maramures were elected to the assembly. The next day, Ferdinand I enacted the unification law.
Military parades and speeches are the most common celebrations on Great Union Day in Bucharest and Alba Iulia. To honor those who fought for independence and unified the country, local events are also held. All over the country, you can see the Romanian blue, yellow, and red national flag, which is waving like the one in today’s artwork. The cobalt blue symbolizes freedom, the chrome yellow justice, and the vermillion red brotherhood.
Romania, happy Great Union Day!
