Today’s Doodle honours Israel’s Independence Day, Yom Ha’atzmaut. The State of Israel declared independence on this day in 1948 in Tel Aviv. The festival takes place on the 5th day of Iyar (ה’ באייר), which falls between late April and early May according to the Gregorian calendar.
The celebrations for this year’s Independence Day run from sunset on May 4th to sunset on May 5th, and are immediately followed by Israeli Memorial Day, or Yom HaZikaron. Each year, the celebration begins with a torch lighting ceremony on Mount Herzl and a welcoming address from the Israeli parliament’s speaker, The Knesset. Twelve Israelis who have made important contributions to the country of Israel will burn 12 torches to represent the 12 tribes of Israel during the lighting ceremony.
Fireworks displays and live entertainment include traditional dances, popular Israeli music, and sing-alongs continue throughout the night following the opening festivities. The next day, families can proudly raise the Israeli flag while enjoying picnics, parades, and legendary aeroplane fly-bys. The Israel Prize event, in which outstanding Israelis are acknowledged and awarded for their cultural achievements to the country, brings the celebration to a close.
Happy Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel!
