The Google Doodle of today honours Nigeria’s Independence Day! The most populous nation in Africa gained its independence from Great Britain on this day in 1960.
On the morning of Independence Day, the President of Nigeria addresses the people in a speech that is broadcast nationwide. The green and white flag, like the one in today’s Doodle, is then raised while Nigerians joyously sing the national anthem. Later, in the nation’s capital, Abuja, the Nigerian Armed Forces march to the beat of beating drums and carry out military exercises.
Many Nigerians celebrate traditional dinners with friends and family the rest of the day. Without plantains and chicken served with jollof rice, a beloved Nigerian meal bursting with West African flavours, it wouldn’t be a true celebration. Beaches are a favourite place for family picnics as well. After dark, the beaches are transformed into outdoor clubs with fuji music.
Happy Independence Day, Nigeria!
