This doodle celebrates the 158th birthday of Dr. Rita Lobato Velho, the first woman to obtain a medical degree and practice as a physician in Brazil! She was also the second woman to become a physician in all of South America and was a passionate advocate for women’s rights.
Dr. Lobato Velho was born on this day to a family of ranchers in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Gifted from an early age, she made it her life’s work to become a physician. At the time, it was very difficult for women to enter medical school. Dr. Lobato Velho was a pioneer in this regard and worked tirelessly to achieve her goal despite discrimination from her classmates and teachers.
She spent several years in Rio de Janeiro before moving to Salvador, where she attended the Federal University of Bahia, where she was welcomed with open arms by her lecturers and colleagues. Dr. Lobato Velho completed the six-year course in just four years, graduating on December 10, 1887. She was the first Brazilian woman to earn a medical degree.
She began serving women from all social classes, with an emphasis on obstetrics. She often provided both free consultations and medication and became known in the community for her generosity. Outside of medicine, Dr. Lobato Velho was also a passionate women’s rights activist. She participated in several feminist movements, including the inclusion of women voters in the 1932 electoral law.
Lobato Velho was an inspirational figure who helped set the course for the next generation of aspiring female physicians. She overcame adversity with grace and used her voice and skills to empower all women in Brazil.
