Google doodle celebrates the 25th birthday

Today’s Doodle celebrates Google’s 25th anniversary. And, while we at Google are always looking ahead, birthdays may also be a chance to reflect. Let’s go back in time to see how we were born 25 years ago…

In the late 1990s, doctorate students Sergey Brin and Larry Page met by chance in Stanford University’s computer science programme. They quickly realised they had identical goals: to make the World Wide Web more accessible. From their dorm rooms, the pair worked feverishly to create a prototype for a better search engine. As the project progressed, they relocated the operation to Google’s first office, a rented garage. Google Inc. was founded on September 27, 1998.

Much has changed since 1998, including our logo, which can be seen in today’s Doodle, but our purpose has not: to organise the world’s knowledge and make it universally accessible and useful. Google is used by billions of people globally to search, connect, work, play, and so much more!
