Today’s doodle celebrates Armenia’s Independence Day. On this day in 1991, the Armenian people voted for independence, officially ending Soviet rule.
Independence Day symbolizes the restoration of the Armenian nation, and many celebrations are held across Armenia. Crowds gather at Republic Square in the capital, Yerevan. Officials give speeches and crowds flock to dance performances. Afterwards, families can enjoy traditional dishes such as harissa (a hearty meat porridge). Of course, there will be fireworks in the sky and the celebrations will continue late into the night.
Today’s artwork depicts the Armenian flag that now flies from buildings and homes. The red, blue and orange flag represents sacrifice, nation and courage.
Happy Armenian Independence Day!
