Google doodle celebrates the Independence Day in India

Today’s doodle, drawn by Vrinda Zaveri, celebrates India’s Independence Day. On this day in 1947, India gained freedom from colonial rule.

After nearly two centuries of inequality, violence, and lack of fundamental rights, Indians yearned for self-governance and sovereignty. Led by notable figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Subhas Chandra Bose, the Indian independence movement was made possible by civil disobedience. The perseverance and sacrifice of the country’s freedom fighters were rewarded.

On Independence Day, many people celebrate by participating in flag-raising ceremonies, parades, musical performances, community meetings, and more. As seen in artwork today, homes, buildings, streets and cars are decorated with the saffron, white and green of the national flag. Millions of Indians also sing the Indian national anthem, Jana Gana Mana (जन गण मन), during the celebrations.

Happy Independence Day, India!
