Google doodle celebrates the Kenya’s Jamhuri Day

Today’s Doodle celebrates Kenya’s Jamhuri Day. Jamhuri is Swahili for “republic.” Kenya attained freedom and independence on this day in 1963, following many years of foreign control. To add to the significance of December 12th, the newly formed nation formally adopted the name “the Republic of Kenya” a year later.

Kenyans celebrate Jamhuri Day with parades, award ceremonies, dance performances, and other events to commemorate their country’s progress and prosperity. Many people hold family gatherings to spend the day off with loved ones and have feasts of national foods such as ugali (cornmeal porridge), githeri (boiled beans and corn), skuma wiki (sautéed greens), and others. The Kenyan national flag, as depicted in today’s artwork, flies high in the sky all day.

Happy Jamhuri Day, Kenya!
