Google doodle celebrates the Lebanon’s Independence Day

Lebanon’s Independence Day is celebrated in today’s Doodle! After over 20 years of foreign occupation, Lebanon attained freedom and sovereignty on this day in 1943.

Since 1920, Lebanon has been a French mandate. By revising the constitution to exclude references to French rule, members of the Lebanese parliament effectively proclaimed their legal independence on November 8, 1943. For this crime, a number of leaders, including Riad El Solh and Bechara El Khoury, were imprisoned three days later. Widespread demonstrations followed, and France came under worldwide censure. The French were compelled by the increasing pressure to free the leaders and formally acknowledge Lebanon’s independence.

Lebanese celebrate Independence Day by getting together with loved ones to go to cultural activities and exciting celebrations. The major festivities take place in Beirut, where a large parade is held in the streets. A lot of people also go to historical sites like Martyrs’ Square and Rashaya Castle. The national flag, like the one in today’s artwork, is proudly waved by Lebanese inhabitants all around the country.

Happy Independence Day, Lebanon!
