Syttende Mai, or Norway Constitution Day, is observed locally on today’s Doodle. One of the world’s oldest constitutions was signed on this day in 1814 when the Norwegian Constituent Assembly convened in Eidsvoll.
Since 1836, people have observed Norway’s national holiday. Many like a delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs, fresh bread, smoked salmon, and a drink of champagne with others to start the day. Additionally, groups congregate at cemeteries and memorials for wreath-laying ceremonies honoring the Norwegians of the past who helped shape the country into what it is now.
Since May 17th is also Children’s Day, the nation’s youngsters are frequently the center of annual celebrations. Marching bands, baton twirlers, and schoolchildren parade through the streets of every region of the nation. Many individuals wave the red, navy blue, and white flag like the one in today’s Doodle or dress in bunad, or traditional clothing.
