The yearly Doodle honours Narodowe Święto Niepodległości, or Poland Independence Day! This national holiday honours the people of the nation for their tenacity and fortitude. After being divided and occupied by foreign powers for 123 years, Poland regained its freedom on this day in 1918.
Polish citizens regained sovereignty and retook their territories following the end of World War I. Józef Pilsudski was named commander in chief and an interim administration was established. He quickly enacted a number of changes to the voting system, working conditions, and agriculture.
Marches in honour of Independence Day are held, and a lot of people use the Polish flag—which is red and white and represents sacrifice and purity—to decorate their homes and cities.
Happy Independence Day, Poland!
