Today’s doodle celebrates Portugal Day, known in Portuguese as “Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas”. The day is celebrated by Portuguese people all over the world and is dedicated to the legendary poet Luís de Camões.
Camões’ best-known epic poem (and perhaps the most famous in Portuguese literature) is Os Lusíadas (The Lusiads), which describes some of the country’s discoveries and achievements. Every year on this day, Portuguese people celebrate their shared culture and history.
Most countries hold their national celebrations in their capital city, but in Portugal the President chooses the city in which the official celebrations will take place.
This year’s celebrations will take place in Pedrógão Grande, Figueiro dos Vinhos, Castanheira de Pela, Leiria and Coimbra. The cities will be buzzing with excitement and inspirational speeches from government officials as crowds gather to support brass bands and huge military parades. No matter where the celebrations take place, the whole nation will be waving the Portuguese flag with pride.
Feliz día de Portugal!
