Google doodle celebrates the Romania’s Great Union Day

Romanian Great Union Day, or Ziua Marii Uniri, is celebrated in today’s yearly Doodle! This holiday honours the coming together of multiple ethnic groups to form one cohesive unit. On this day in 1918, the National Assembly of Alba Iulia passed a resolution favouring a stronger union between the Kingdom of Romania, Transylvania, Bessarabia, and Bukovina.

As a result, the nation was accepted onto the international stage and given official recognition by other countries. Romania’s population grew by 10 million, while its territory almost doubled. After years of battling for independence, Alba Iulia had its first celebration, which gave the city’s diverse population a sense of identity and unity.

Romanians celebrate Great Union Day around the nation with flag-raising ceremonies, historical plays, musical and dance performances, and military parades.
