Slovakia Freedom and Democracy Day is honoured in today’s Doodle! Slovakians throughout the world celebrate the events that led to their country’s freedom each year.
When Czechoslovakian students planned a series of peaceful protests in November 1939, it was one of these pivotal moments. Many individuals joined together to demand for their freedom from the Nazi regime.
The “Gentle Revolution” took place five decades after the protests, despite its initial failure. The second series of nonviolent protests took occurred in Prague and Bratislava, spearheaded by students and artists. They compelled the autocratic government to accept a peaceful transition to democracy on this day in 1989 through their acts of civil disobedience.
Thousands of people celebrated the historic event by jingling their keys, a symbol of democracy that activists continue to utilise in demonstrations today.
This occasion serves as a potent reminder to many that civil disobedience can result in amazing change.
Happy Freedom and Democracy Day, Slovakia!
