Today’s Doodle honours Trinidad and Tobago’s Independence Day. The twin island officially declared its independence from British sovereignty on this day in 1962.
As depicted in today’s Doodle, Trinbagonians raised their national flag for the first time on that historic day in 1962. On top of a red field, the flag has white borders and a black diagonal stripe. White stands for human equality, black denotes power, and red denotes the energy of the country.
All around the nation, Trinbagonians celebrate Independence Day. The largest procession is held in Port of Spain’s Queen’s Park Savannah, the region’s first public park. Military members march in the centre of the nation’s capital as calypso music is played by bands. People return to the park to watch fireworks after an annual ceremony in which national heroes receive honours.
Happy Independence Day, Trinidad & Tobago!
