The Google Doodle of today honours US Veterans Day and was made by Diné (a member of the Navajo Nation) and Marine Corps veteran Monty Little. The artwork, which is supported by a 3D paper sculpture of the American flag, is woven with Google letters in military camouflage to symbolise how important our soldiers are to the fabric of our country.
The United States government established Armistice Day in 1919 as a day to remember soldiers who served in World War I. Soldiers pushed for Armistice Day to honour all veterans after World War II. In 1954, the holiday’s name was officially changed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Communities all around the nation now host luncheons, military displays, and educational activities to recognise the services and sacrifices made by all US military personnel, past and present. At 11 a.m., the exact time that World War I ended—the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month—many people observe a moment of quiet. Many veterans and their loved ones spend the day seeing the monuments in Washington, D.C., or participating in ceremonial ceremonies at the National Cemetery of the Veteran Association.
All those who have safeguarded our nation are appreciated.
Happy Veterans Day, USA!
