The present intuitive Doodle observes Lake Xochimilco, a natural lake near to Mexico City that is the final remaining native habitat for axolotls on the world (cousins of the lizard). During the 15th century, the lake was home to the Aztec people, but landowners during the colonial era eventually took over ownership of the lake. The Mexican government gave Lake Xochimilco back to the locals on this day in 1920. Today, Lake Xochimilco is a place of recreation, a cultural attraction, and the home of a unique species of axolotl.
Local farmers adopted the ancient chinampa farming method, which involves creating artificial floating gardens, due to the unique landscape of Lake Xochimilco. These chinamperos (or ranchers) grow many different amphibian plants, from normal vegetables to restorative spices, in the supplement rich soil. Rowing and kayaking are also popular here, and cruising the lake in trijaneras, colorful wooden boats, is an essential pastime.
Lake Xochimilco is likewise as of now the final local natural surroundings on Earth for axolotls, new water lizards that live in the water rather than ashore. They are able to regenerate limbs, gills, and even parts of their eyes and brains, and their mouths are permanently turned in a slight smile! Tragically, these sensitive animals were recorded as a fundamentally jeopardized animal categories in 2008.
Xolotl, the Aztec god of fire and lightning, is said to have disguised himself as a salamander to avoid being sacrificed, according to legend. The Bank of Mexico included the salamander on the country’s 50-peso bill in 2021 because the axolotl is held in such high cultural regard in Mexico.
After the axolotl ecosystem was damaged for years by pollution, invasive species, man-made disturbances, and other obstacles, many people are now working to protect Lake Xochimilco. To preserve these creatures, which have become an essential part of their identity and way of life, local chinamperos have been actively restoring their lands with improved fertilizers and water filters.
