More than 100,000 Romanians gathered in Alba Iulia on this day in 1918 to witness a vote by the Great Assembly that joined Transylvania, Crișana, Maramureș, and Banat with the Romanian Kingdom.
Since 1990, this date has been commemorated as Unification Day, or Great Union Day, Romania’s national holiday, which is honoured in today’s Doodle.
Alba Iulia, along with the nation’s capital, Bucharest, is a key destination for celebrations of the past and present in the city where unification was finalised.
The Romanian flag, portrayed in the Doodle artwork, is flown by public institutions. Parades are held in Bucharest and other cities across the country, as well as various other cultural events.
Happy Great Union Day, Romania!
