Skaters and predictions of the 2024 World Figure Skating Championships

Three of the four reigning world champions in figure skating are from Japan: the men’s, women’s, and pairs divisions are all held by Shoma Ono, Kaori Sakamoto, Riku Miura, and Ryuichi Kihara, respectively. The current Ice Dance champions are Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates.

For the World Championships this year, all of the above athletes are expected to return to the top of the podium. In the men’s division, other competitors include Frenchman Adam Siao Him Fa, the 2024 European Champion, two-time U.S. Champion Ilia Malinin (also known as the “Quad God”), and Yuma Kagiyama of Japan, the 2022 Olympic silver medalist.

In the women’s division, European Champion Loena Hendrickx and Japanese partner Hana Yoshida, who just became the 19th woman to successfully perform a triple axel in competition, will challenge defending champion Sakamoto. Amber Glenn, the recent U.S. women’s champion, might also step onto the podium.

With Miura/Kihara, the Canadian veterans Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps, and the defending bronze medalists Sara Conti and Niccolò Macii from Italy, the pairs competition appears to be a confrontation between Japan, Canada, and Italy.

Additionally, it looks like there will be three countries competing for the gold medal on the ice dance podium: Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier from Canada; Chock and Bates from the United States; and Charlène Guignard and Marco Fabbri from Italy.
