How to Watch ‘Shōgun’: The New Series From Anywhere

The wait is ended for FX Network’s brand-new adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 bestselling samurai novel Shōgun, which caused rather a stir with its Super Bowl trailer.

The action-drama, which takes place in medieval Japan in 1600, is centered on the ascension of Cosmo Jarvis, star of Peaky Blinders, as samurai John Blackthorne, an English foreigner who becomes a sailor while being exploited as a pawn in Lord Yoshii Toranaga’s fight to become the head of the nation’s ruling class.

The 10-episode series, which is directed by Justin Marks, whose credits include Top Gun: Maverick, and his wife Rachel Kondo, stars Hiroyuki Sanada as Toranaga. Sanada also acted as the series’ producer. Anna Sawai, who starred in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, portrays Lady Mariko, a mystery Christian noblewoman.

This new series is the second limited TV adaptation of the book; the first one, in 1980, starred Richard Chamberlain, Toshiro Mifune, and Yoko Shimada and was a global hit.
