How to Watch the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, Who's Nominated, and Extra

The Irish actors, who are clearly not British, have once again turned out in force for the 2024 British Academy Film Awards. They received two nominations for best actor, for Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of “the father of the atomic bomb” in Oppenheimer and Barry Keoghan’s star turn in the dark comedy Saltburn, and one nomination for best supporting actor, for Paul Mescal’s role as Andrew Scott’s lover in All of Us Strangers. However, Scott was not included in the best actor category, despite being heavily anticipated to receive a nomination as well.

The Irish received half as many nominations as they did the previous year, when Keoghan won the best supporting actor award for his role in the tragicomedy The Banshees of Inisherin, along with Kerry Condon, his Irish co-star, in the best supporting actress category. Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell, Daryl McCormack, and Mescal also received acting nominations. Despite this, the Irish have the strongest showing this year among all nationalities outside of the U.S. and the United Kingdom.

The British Academy Film Awards, also referred to as the BAFTAs (British Academy of Film and Television Arts), are an annual celebration of film, akin to the Oscars but with a focus on British cinema. The television awards are presented separately in May. The awards ceremony, which was established in 1949, will be in its 77th year this year.

How can You watch the ceremony, and when is it?

The British Academy Film Awards ceremony is set to happen this year on Sunday, February 18, at London’s Southbank Center’s Royal Festival Hall.

Starting at 8 p.m. local time (3 p.m. ET), it will be aired on BBC One and streamed on BBC iPlayer.

Event coverage from the red carpet prior to the awards ceremony will be available on the BAFTA YouTube channel.

Who will host the BAFTAs in 2024?

This year’s host of the awards ceremony is David Tennant, who gained international recognition for playing the principal character in the classic British science fiction series Doctor Who from 2005 to 2010 and again from 2022 to 2023.

Jane Millichip, CEO of BAFTA, said about the Scottish actor who’s also known for his theater work: “He is deservedly beloved by British and international audiences, alike. His warmth, charm and mischievous wit will make it a must-watch show next month for our guests at the Royal Festival Hall and the millions of people watching at home.”

Who is nominated for a BAFTA in 2024?

Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan seems to be the movie to beat; it has been nominated for 13 BAFTAs this year, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. At the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, the ensemble and crew have already won numerous awards for outstanding acting and overall production.

Poor Things, a bleak comedy directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and co-produced by the Irish firm Element Pictures, is trailing closely behind Oppenheimer with 11 nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actress for Emma Stone. Additionally, it is vying for Best Film.

Killers of the Flower Moon, the epic film directed by Martin Scorsese, received nominations for nine awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Robert de Niro. Remarkably, Lily Gladstone—a favourite for the Oscars and the winner of the Golden Globe for Best Actress—did not receive a nomination at the BAFTAs.

The Zone of Interest, a war film helmed by Jonathan Glazer, garnered nine nominations as well.

Barbie, the box office hit directed by Greta Gerwig, received nominations for five awards: Best Original Screenplay, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Leading Actress (Margot Robbie), and Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling).

The Rising Star Award, sponsored by British telecom company EE and the only award that is open to public voting, has the following nominees: Jacob Elordi from Saltburn; Phoebe Dynevor, the lead actress in Fair Play; Mia McKenna-Bruce from How to Have Sex; Sophie Wilde from Talk to Me; and Ayo Edebiri, a Boston native best known for The Bear and an Irish icon in her own right.
