This week, NBC Sports and Peacock will broadcast live coverage of the World Figure Skating Championships from Boston’s TD Garden, featuring the best figure skaters in the world.
In the most important international competition before the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, defending champion Ilia Malinin and the ice dance couple of Madison Chock and Evan Bates lead the U.S. team.
Malinin wants to become just the second American men’s singles skater in the last four decades to defend a world title, following Nathan Chen, after shocking everyone with his quadruple Axel last season. Yuma Kagiyama of Japan, the silver medalist from the previous year’s event, will compete strongly against him once more.
Since December 2023, Malinin has won eight straight competitions. He made history this season by attempting seven quadruple jumps in a single program at his final two contests (the U.S. Championships in January and the Grand Prix Final in December), each time landing on a single quad.
The first ice dancers to win a third straight world title in 28 years could be Chock and Bates.
The married couple’s two biggest victories this season have been a record-tying sixth U.S. ice dance crown in January and a repeat victory at the Grand Prix Final in December.
Additionally, they lost to the British Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson at Skate America in October, ending their eight-competition winning streak. They also finished second at the Four Continents Championships in February, against Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Canada.
The world’s best skater this season is from the United States in the women’s division. In 2024–25, Amber Glenn has won all five of her matches, including the Grand Prix Final in December, which is the largest title won by a U.S. women’s singles skater in 14 years.
Alysa Liu and Isabeau Levito are also in the running for medals. Levito missed the majority of this season because of a stress reaction in her right foot after winning silver at the 2024 Worlds.
Liu, who earned a bronze medal at the 2022 World Championships, made her comeback this season after a two-year hiatus. At the national competition, she finished just 1.46 points shy of Glenn.
The American trio aims to challenge Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto, who is striving to become the first female singles skater to secure four consecutive world titles since Carol Heiss achieved five from 1956 to 1960.
In the pairs event, fans can expect an exciting contest featuring the 2024 World champions Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps from Canada, the 2023 World champions Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara from Japan, and Germany’s Minerva Hase and Nikita Volodin, who have claimed victory in the last two Grand Prix Finals.
Stellato-Dudek, a silver medalist at the 2000 World Junior Championships in singles for the U.S., took a 15-year break from skating before returning to compete in pairs and later switching her allegiance to Canada. Remarkably, at the age of 40, she became the oldest female figure skater to win a world title across any of the four disciplines.
