The most exclusive club in college football is going to welcome a new member.
This Saturday night in New York City, there will be a ceremony to award the 2023 Heisman Trophy. And the most important trophy in sports will be taken home by one of the following players: Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., or LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels.
After an incredible second season with the Tigers, Daniels is the clear favourite to be voted college football’s most outstanding player by the bookmakers. With a 72.2 completion % and just four interceptions, the senior quarterback tied Nix for the most passing touchdowns (41) and passing yards (3,812) in the country. Additionally, Daniels led No. 13 LSU to a 9-3 win by rushing for 1,134 yards—the most of any quarterback—and 10 scores.
Penix, on the other hand, helped No. 3 Washington become the first Pac-12 team to ever start bowl season undefeated, making a strong case for himself as a Heisman candidate. With a 65.9 completion percentage, nine interceptions, and the most passing yards (4,218) and touchdown passes (33) in the country, the senior signal-caller led the field.
Before the Ducks lost to Washington in the exciting (and perhaps final) Pac-12 Championship Game, Nix was the favourite to win the Heisman Trophy in betting. In addition to ranking second in passing yards (4,145) behind Penix, the senior quarterback for the Ducks tied Daniels for the most touchdown passes (40), and topped the country in completion percentage (77.2). And it took just three attempts to take him out. Nix and the eighth-ranked Ducks suffered defeats in two games, against Penix and the Huskies.
Harrison is hoping to become the fifth wide receiver in history to win the Heisman Trophy, to sum up his goals. With the No. 7 Buckeyes, the junior wide receiver caught 67 receptions for 1,211 yards and 14 touchdowns. Harrison was tied for second in the country in touchdown catches and ninth in receiving yards.
