A new documentary called Milli Vanilli, which launched on Paramount+ on Tuesday (Oct. 24), tells the story of the defunct pop duet Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan. Through recently discovered interviews with Pilatus (who passed away in 1998) and Morvan, as well as record executives, the actual singers on the album, and others, the new movie aims to give an in-depth look at the rise and collapse of the artists from the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The two model-turned-singers rose to fame and fortune thanks to the 1989 release of their debut album, which helped them enjoy considerable notoriety before they fell from favour. The hit single “Girl You Know It’s True” sold more than 30 million copies globally as a result of the success, which led to the set becoming platinum six times in the United States. In 1990, the duo became one of the most well-known artists in the world after winning the Grammy for best new act. That is, until Pilatus and Morvan’s lip-synching was exposed during a live performance, after which it was later discovered that the two were not the singers on the album. Later, the Grammy for the team was also withdrawn.
Viewers will get new perspective through the documentary’s many segments and interviews.
